Vikernes, a.k.a. Count Grishnackh, was a prominent member of the Norwegian death metal scene of the 1990s. He was the head of the one man musical project Burzum, until he was arrested and convicted for the murder of Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth, guitarist and co-founder of the band Mayhem, for reasons that remain unclear. Vikernes was also found guilty of committing arson against several Norwegian churches, which he claimed he had destroyed because they had desecrated pagan burial grounds. He was sentenced to to 21 years in prison, of which he served 16 before being released in March of this year.
“Chaos” will be directed by Japanese director Sion Sono in his English-language debut, and the script will be based on Michael Moynihan’s and Didrik Soderlind’s book of the same name. The book, which documents the rise of black metal and the wave of violence which bubbled up in Norway in 1993, was highly controversial. It has been criticized for employing poor journalism and espousing fascist opinions, and was even slammed by Vikernes himself, who claimed it “[filled] the heads of a generation of metal fans with lies.”
Despite its content and subject, “Chaos” producer Stuart Pollok says that the adaptation will be geared toward teens, and will be a “psychological horror” movie. One thing is for sure: Vikernes’ rage and violence will probably startle some of the more light-hearted “Twilight”-ers who are fond of Jasper Hale.
“Twilight”-ers, do you think Rathbone is a good fit for the infamous Vikernes? Will you brave the death metal to see Jasper? Are there any fans of death metal out there who object to the casting?
