‘Star Trek’ Suprises Analysts With Strong $32M Opening, Continues To Eye $75M Weekend Tally

Call it a foregone conclusion, but if we learned anything from last week’s opening numbers for “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” it’s that very little will keep the geek contingent away from the multiplex this summer. So when J.J. Abrams’ insanely-anticipated “Star Trek” revamp beamed into theaters on Thursday night, we knew it was going to open big, but no one — including industry analysts, apparently — predicted the types of numbers the film has garnered so far.

Indeed, according to sources close to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily, “Star Trek” has pulled in some rather surprising figures since it opened wide on Thursday night, to the tune of an estimated $32M over the past two days. Granted, we won’t have official numbers until after the weekend, but should these types of numbers continue to stay true, the sci fi epic could hit the high watermark of $75M predicted earlier by Paramount execs.

That said, Finke is quick to point out that $75M may be wishful thinking on the studio’s part, with unnamed “rival studios” pegging the opening weekend take to top out at $65M. However, should the film do better than a $50M opening weekend — and at this point, it appears that it should hit that mark with ease — then Paramount will see this as a huge success, if only because the film managed to not only attract the hardcore Trekkie’s, but also new (i.e. younger) viewers, who may well be seeing their first take on the classic 1960’s space odyssey with “Star Trek.”

Be sure to keep it locked to MTV Movies Blog throughout the weekend as we keep you up on “Star Trek” and its opening weekend numbers.
