Judd Apatow Reveals Adam Sandler’s ‘Funny’ Films With Owen Wilson, Elizabeth Banks and More

As I mentioned recently, there are few things I love as much as a good “movie-with-a-movie” scene, be it a glimpse at “Habeus Corpus,” “Chubby Rain” or Eli Roth’s upcoming Nazi flick “The Nation’s Pride.” So recently, when I got a few minutes with comedy mastermind Judd Apatow, I had to ask him about all of the upcoming mini-movies in “Funny People” that will pair Adam Sandler with the likes of Owen Wilson.

“There’s a poster in his house from a movie called ’My Best Friend is a Robot,’ and Owen is the robot,” Apatow said of his July 31st comedy, which stars Sandler as a comedian whose career has taken off with a series of popular – if not ill-conceived – high-concept movies. “There’s also a movie called ’Redux,’ where he turns into a baby.”

Talking about that second imaginary film, Apatow told us the Sandler flick will be depicted as a cross between “Little Man” and a recent Zac Efron hit. “It’s kind of like ’17 Again,’ except he becomes a six month old baby,” Apatow laughed, adding that we’ll actually see footage of that one. “It’s Adam’s head, but on a baby’s body. It’s really funny. We actually shot a couple scenes from it.”

A third film is secretly bringing back one of Apatow’s favorite leading ladies, the beautiful breakout from “The 40-Year-Old-Virgin,” who will also be playing herself. “[Sandler’s George Simmons character] made a romantic comedy called ’Mistake’ with Elizabeth Banks,” he explained. “There’s all sorts of posters, some we shot scenes for.”

The one I’m most eager to see might be Sandler’s “Splash” take-off. “There’s a movie called ’Mer-man,’ that he’s in as well,” Apatow said with a grin on his face. “I’ve heard they already sold [’Mer-man’] to be a real movie after we made it as a joke.”

Which of these fake Adam Sandler movies are you most eager to see? Would you watch any of them if they were developed into real, full-length flicks?
