Tom Cruise Searches For Next Projects, Four In The Offing

Some might say that Tom Cruise is in a tricky place right now. Riding a high from “Tropic Thunder” and “Valkyrie,” he’s poised to win back the hearts and dollars of moviegoers around the world. So it’s understandable that he’s choosing his next project with care — but have you wondered just how much care goes into a Cruise vehicle? Millions of dollars, according to Variety.

Right now, Cruise has four projects that he’s contemplating, and all are undergoing heavy and expensive rewrites to tailor themselves to their leading man to the tune of $250,000 a week.

Out of the millions spent, which one will catch Cruise’s eye? The first in line may be Len Wiseman’s “Motorcade.” But it could just as easily be“The Tourist,” which will pair Cruise with Charlize Theron. But he’s also very keen on laughing his way to“Wichita” with Cameron Diaz, provided they can beef up the action along with the jokes.

Perhaps the most surprising one to receive a Cruise makeover is “The Matarese Circle,” which was in the process of being rewritten by director David Cronenberg. Apparently, not even Cronenberg’s rewrites have enticed the actor to officially sign on, and the project is being tweaked further by Paul Attanasio.

But there is method to all the money-spending, as Cruise has vetoed political thriller “The 28th Amendment” (which would have cast him as the President), and the romantic comedy “Lost for Words.” “28th Amendment” even received an extra polish from “Transformers” writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, but to no avail.

It’s an expensive waiting game for any studio to be playing, especially as audiences are steering clear of all but the lightest and family-friendly offerings. But it certainly is a fascinating example of just how much creative power one man can wield in Tinseltown.

MTV readers, do you think Cruise is worth this kind of money? Do you think he’s being too picky when it comes to these projects? Which one would you advise him to do?
