“Star Trek” fever is gripping the world wide web, as the franchise re-boot was unspooled Monday evening at Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse, and fans and critics alike have been weighing in with their thoughts. Now, MTV follows it up by letting those outside the Texas area in on the fun, with this exclusive clip from the May 8th blockbuster.
“You’ve got a talented tongue,” Captain James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine) flirts in the scene, which depicts him meeting future Enterprise communications officer Uhura for the first time in a local watering hole.
The scene is particularly cool for the reason that any Kirk-Uhura talk of romance is instantly evocative of the landmark kiss between original “Trek” legends William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols. A trailblazing TV moment, it was the first interracial kiss on U.S. broadcast television.
After Kirk correctly identifies Uhura’s alien-based areas of expertise, actress Zoe Saldana responds: “I’m impressed. For a moment there, I thought you were just a dumb hick, who only has sex with farm animals.”
“Well,” Kirk coyly responds. “Not only.”
This being the early days of the Enterprise’s cocky captain, his attempt at amour goes awry quickly. Although Uhura seems to be intrigued by her young would-be suitor, a bouncer confronts the local “farmboy,” threatening that he’s outnumbered four-to-one.
“So, get some more guys,” the newly-reimagined, badass Kirk responds. “And then it will be an even fight.”
What do you think about Pine’s new, badass, sexier Kirk? Is it in keeping with “Star Trek” tradition, or too much?
