Catherine Hardwicke Says There’s No ‘Twilight’ Anime…Well, Not Yet

Recently, rumors spread like wildfire across the Internet concerning a seemingly unlikely hybrid: “Twilight” anime. And if you picked up the film’s Special Edition DVD over the weekend, you’ve likely already heard director Catherine Hardwicke and Robert Pattinson plant the seed in their audio commentary.

To get to the bottom of the mystery, we went straight to the “Twilight” director herself. And, well, let’s just say that the only animated thing about Edward Cullen that you’ll be seeing in the near future is Robert Pattinson’s untamable hair.

“I haven’t heard any plans yet,” Catherine Hardwicke remarked, surprised when I told her at the launch of her “Twilight Director’s Notebook: The Story of How We Made the Movie” that some Twilighters think she let the cat out of the bag.

At one point in the DVD commentary, Pattinson commented: “I look Asian in this scene. I do, I look like an anime character.” Hearing that, Hardwicke responded: “Hey, I think there’s going to be an anime version of this in Japan. So you will be an anime character.”

Clearing up the record, Hardwicke told us that it was just an off-the-cuff comment and that nothing is planned.

At the risk of bringing back the rumor, however, the director did joke that she might be willing to reverse her decision to stop making “Twilight” movies if somebody was willing to let her make an anime film. “I think that’s a cool idea, maybe,” she grinned. “Maybe we can do that. That would be so fun; I’d love to direct that.”

“Let’s stir it up,” Hardwicke urged the fans who’ve eagerly latched on to the rumor. “We’ll find some cool way to do it, if we do it.”

What do you say, Twilighters? Would you like to see Edward and Bella looking like Speed Racer and Cowboy Bebop? Let us know!
