"Watchmen" may be the toast of fandom, but as far as films not based on comics, Tim Burton's live action/stop-motion hybrid "Alice in Wonderland" is easily one of the most anticipated. To date, the enigmatic director has generated considerable buzz for an inspired casting roster that includes Johnny Depp, Helen Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Alan Rickman, Michael Sheen, Christopher Lee and, of course, Anne Hathaway.
Hathaway plays the White Queen alongside Bonham Carter's Red Queen, and according to her it's a role best described by an anecdote. "A friend of mine just gave me a magnet that was a bunny rabbit holding a knife," she recalled. "It said 'Cute but psycho, it evens out.' And that's kind of my character as the White Queen."
Her alter-ego won't be getting a ton of screentime, and the actress insists that's just fine with her. "It's a very small part in the movie, [which is] obviously not about me. I was just happy to be a splash of yellow in a scene where Tim needed yellow."
Joining the festivities gave Hathaway one added bonus...making googly eyes at Johnny Depp all day.
"I have a couple scenes with Johnny Depp," she gushed. "I wish I could be so cool about it and say like, 'Oh yeah, it's just Johnny.' But I am such a huge fan, I felt really embarressed. He would catch me staring at him and I would have to look up, but we were shooting on green screens so there was nothing to look at. I'd be like 'Oh look, a bit more green wall. Did you notice that? No? Good.'"
Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" is currently scheduled to hit theaters March 5, 2010. Anne Hathaway can next be seen in the comedy "Bride Wars," co-starring Kate Hudson.
