“Ninja Scroll” is one of the most popular anime movies outside of Japan, ranking alongside the classics “Ghost in the Shell” and “Akira.” It’s a dark and gruesome story, following Jubei Kibagami, a ninja who finds himself on a quest to defeat the Eight Devils of Kimon. The villains include a hunchback, who boasts a wasp’s nest as his deformity, a giant man with stone skin, and a woman with snake tattoos which can come to life.
I imagine much of the nightmarish weirdness will be left out of the American remake — in the first half hour alone, there is dismemberment and graphic rape, which isn’t the sort of thing we usually see onscreen.
No director has been attached, and at this point, DiCaprio is not attached to star. He remains only an interested producer — and obviously, one heck of an anime fan.
Well, “Ninja Scroll” fans — are you interested in seeing the story done in live action? Or will it be too watered down to be as enjoyable?
