Dominic Monaghan And Freddy Rodriguez Hope For Good ‘Fortuna’

The best science fiction reflects and questions our current affairs — but this latest vision of the future might just hit a little too close to our shaky economic home.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dominic Monaghan and Freddy Rodriguez have been cast in “Fortuna,” a thriller set in a bleak economic future. The world has collapsed due to climate problems and an economic meltdown, leaving a handful of people wealthy, and the rest living in poverty. To keep the peace and inspire hope, those elite few create a mysterious game called Fortuna, where one in a thousand wins a fortune, and can escape to the upper classes.

Not surprisingly, all is not as it seems.

The game’s contestants are never heard from again, which seems to fit neatly into the wealthy’s plan to reduce poverty. Despite the long and deadly odds, Monaghan, Rodriguez, Barthelemy Grossmann (also the film’s writer and director) play three men who sign up to play. Having seen variations of this theme before (most recently in “The Island”), I think we can all guess that they’ll uncover the ugly plan, and destroy the system. But that’s not to say it won’t be an enjoyable ride — even if this kind of bleak planet seems right around the corner.

Kind of makes you wish for the high-octane apocalypse of “Mad Max,” doesn’t it?

What do you think, film fans? Is “Fortuna” just too depressingly close to home to appeal to you? Have you seen it all before in “Soylent Green”? Or are you up to watching Monaghan and Rodriguez try to win the futuristic lottery?
