Mike Myers has taken the stage and the golden popcorn is getting handed out. But there’s a lot more going on besides what you see on TV. And we’ve got you covered every which way thanks to our army of correspondents. The backstage Movie Awards live blog begins now!
8:02 p.m. ET — Charlize Theron slips in, using Jon Voight as cover. Minutes later, Voight and director Michael Bay chat about a potentially awesome movie team that we can only dream of (“Anaconda” but with more explosions?).
8:05 p.m. — Robert Downey Jr. shakes hands with the Rock. RDJ is officially the coolest guy back here, as “Superbad” star Emma Stone and “High School Musical” co-stars (and significant others) Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens all walk by, stare for a minute, and whisper, “Oh my God!” to their various handlers.
8:14 p.m. — Will Smith follows his son Jaden around, a bemused smirk on his face. Nearby, Liv Tyler is telling her assistant that she needs to slip off to the ladies’ room, and Emile Hirsch practices his Kurt Cobain scowl (while wearing a Cobain sweater, of course.)
8:27 p.m. — Backstage in the green room. “Does this thing have Tivo?” Jack Black asked fellow visiters backstage watching the show. “I want to watch Coldplay.”
8:40 p.m. — “Dude, that was awesome … very funny,” Zac Efron lauded Seth Rogen on his smoke-filled intro, backstage after having a conversation with Ben Stiller about “High School Musical 3.”
8:45 p.m. — Moments after getting off-stage, Will Ferrell and Danny McBride were backstage, comparing note on the big per-screen opening of their comedy, “The Foot Fist Way.” When we asked them if they overcome stage fright by imagining the crowd naked, Will grinned: “No, I actually imagine you naked.”
8:54 p.m. — Seth Rogen just got lost making his way from backstage to a dressing room. Rather than going through the proper door, Seth and his people took a random left turn, which led them into a long hallway full of dancers confused to see the “Knocked Up” star weaving between them. “As you were, ladies,” he said, offering up his trademark staccato laugh. “Stretch everything out good!”
9:03 p.m. — Katie Holmes made a beeline for hubbie Tom Cruise, giving him a kiss and wishing him “Good luck” as he chatted up friend Ben Stiller. Cruise then ran into none other than Sarah Jessica Parker, offering her a big hug and congrats for the big “Sex and the City” opening. “So good to see you again,” SJP replied.
9:05 p.m. — Holmes was next up for Parker, who indulged her affection towards Carrie Bradshaw. “I haven’t seen the movie yet,” she said of “Sex.” “I want to have all my friends over. We’re gonna dress up and do it right!”
9:10 p.m. — Who were the first celebrities spotted at the after party halfway through the show? James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill, of course.
9:16 p.m. — Anna Faris, Anne Hathaway and Rumer Willis spent several minutes backstage, comparing notes on the various cities they’re currently working in, their upcoming movies, and their shared love for “The Wire.”
9:28 p.m. — An impromptu “High School” reunion backstage, as a grinning Zac Efron came off stage with his popcorn in hand, showing it to his “Hairspray” director Adam Shankman. Just then, Efron caught sight of Vanessa Hudgens running up to give him a hug. “I was so freaked out!” Efron told her about being on stage. Handing Vanessa his golden popcorn trophy, he said “Check it out,” to which she replied, “It’s not as heavy as I thought.”
