First we hit up Rodeo Drive, where somewhere in-between the Dior and Prada stores, my producer Ryan came up with the rather bizarre idea of having me re-enact the “Do you work on commission? Big mistake… Huge mistake” scene from “Pretty Woman.” Yes, unfortunately that meant I had to play Julia Roberts minus the white skirt, blouse and hat. So before I had a chance to think twice about it, I was pushed into the Louis Vuitton store while our shooter Matt secretly rolled the cameras outside to re-enact the famous scene. The hardest part: keeping a straight face.
Next we rolled to the legendary Pink’s Hot Dogs stand on La Brea, and even though it was well past 2 p.m., there was still a lunch-line that stretched all the way round the building. The wait time: 45 minutes. Really? For a hot dog? A quick flash of the MTV badge later, we jumped the line (another perk of the job, I guess) and ordered a Pink favorite: the greasy-chili-cheesy-spicy hot dog with greasy-cheesy-chili fries. And yes, I ate it all!
Adam Sandler next, and the sneak peek screening of his latest comedy, “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan.” It was my first time interviewing Adam, and all I can say is what a nice guy! Now believe me, I’m not just saying that. I’d tell you the truth, but this fella is one of the nicest people I’ve ever had to interview. Sure, he might play up to being a little awkward in interviews, but he is undoubtedly one of the funniest and most quick-witted comedians I’ve met so far. First, we surprised Adam with an old tape we found of him auditioning to be an MTV VJ from way, way back — a young, skinny Sandler.
And then if that wasn’t enough, we surprised him with a face from his past: James Karz — one of our MTV production assistants — was at one point in his life a successful little actor, the kid who grabs Drew Barrymore’s ass in “The Wedding Singer.” After a second take, Adam remembered James as the kid, and soon the two were reminiscing about the old days with Adam asking James ’How are your parents?’ and ’Have you kept in touch with Drew?’ James wishes he had…but he didn’t.
The next day it was time to eat more junk food on camera, except for this time it was 9 in the morning and the food of choice was my favorite burger joint on the West Coast, In-N-Out Burger.
What started as a simple drive-thru shoot turned into a cheap (free!) opportunity for all of us to eat a big Double Double Cheeseburger breakfast first thing in the morning. (Another perk of the job — love it!)
The problem is, I have a suit to get into on Sunday, when I host the MTV Movie Awards Live preshow, and with all this eating, I’m not sure it’ll fit!
I’m off to the gym!
The MTV Movie Awards will air live on MTV on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, with MTV News’ “Coming Attractions” preshow kicking the evening off at 7:30 p.m. ET! Meanwhile, stay tuned to the MTV Movies Blog and MovieAwards.MTV.com.
