Judd Apatow Snags Adam Sandler For…Relationship Drama?

Sure, the potent combination of Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler, reuniting for a recently announced new project, means plenty of laughs. But could it be that their next film owes more to “Punch Drunk Love” than it does to “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry”?

Apatow thinks so.

“It’s a relationship movie,” he said of the still-untitled project, which will star Sandler, Seth Rogen, and Leslie Mann. “It’s not a big high-concept movie. It’s hopefully going to be a very, very funny drama.”

It’s the next step for the writer/director behind “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked-Up,” films he called “d-ick movies with heart” when he spoke with MTV News last August.

“Every movie I’m trying to find a way to go deeper, to tell stories about subjects that are important and make them less and less broad while making them equally as funny,” “It’s another step in that progression. It’s a comedy, but it has more drama in it. A hilarious drama is what I’m going for.”

Ratcheting up the drama, though, doesn’t mean he won’t be inviting back many of his comic regulars. Ratcheting up the budget does.

“I don’t know if I can afford them anymore,” he said of troupe members like Jonah Hill and Paul Rudd, “but I certainly will be inviting them.”

Apatow revealed that he just finished the “vomit rough draft” of the project.
