The Osbournes: a "Crazy Train" of family drama
Before reality TV fanatics were "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," they were moshing with "The Osbournes" -- and loving every minute of it. Twelve years ago today, MTV debuted the groundbreaking series that gave both metal heads and Middle America an inside look at Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne's wacky family.
Up until that point, rock royalty like Ozzy had kept boob-tube cameras at arm's length, but when the Prince of Darkness invited fans into his home, nothing appeared to be off limits. The show aired for four seasons on the network, during which loyal viewers witnessed everything from Kelly's brief stint in the pop-punk scene (and even briefer relationship with The Used frontman, Bert McCracken) to Jack's inability to get out of bed every morning.
The Osbourne Family, all dressed up in their signature black threads.
There were many serious moments, too, like when Ozzy got into an ATV accident, which nearly killed him, and when Sharon bravely battled breast cancer. The family's ups and downs, struggles and triumphs, hammered home that they weren't so different from the rest of us, after all -- just really, really loud.
In the years since the show ended, each Osbourne has forged a different path in and out of the spotlight: Ozzy continues to make music with his mates in Black Sabbath. (The band's latest album, 13, which was produced by Rick Rubin, came out last summer.) Sharon has appeared as a co-host on "The Talk" and judge on "The X Factor," and even had her own short-lived talk show. Jack eventually outgrew his slacker ways to become the host of his own adventure-based show, "Adrenaline Junkie," in addition to getting married and becoming a dad. Kelly, always the trendsetter, is now a co-host of "Fashion Police" on E! alongside Joan Rivers. (Aimee Osbourne, Kelly and Jack's sister, who didn't take part in the show, still maintains a low public profile.)
Sure, the fam has experienced their share of hardships and heartaches over the past decade, including ongoing issues with substance abuse, depression, Jack's diagnosis with multiple sclerosis and a brief separation between Ozzy and Sharon, but thankfully, they've endured -- together and as individuals. And judging by the adorable pic below that Kelly Instagrammed from this past weekend's Oscars, the queens of the roost are closer than ever.
"Finally found my Mumma! And she is already causing trouble! #oscars," Kelly wrote.
Happy anniversary, Osbournes clan! Still thick as thieves -- and causing a ruckus -- after all these years.
