Lauren Conrad Keeps Kentucky Derby Tradition Alive With Massive Hat [Photos]

Lauren Conrad upholds the Derby Day hat tradition.

For almost 140 years, the Kentucky Derby has been the perfect excuse for Southern socialites to put on their Sunday best, drink one too many mint juleps and gamble 'til the cows horses come home. It's the most famous of the Triple Crown races, but not just for the view of the strapping thoroughbreds -- it's also the premier place to show off HUMUNGOUS hats. Not even a royal wedding can hold a candle to this annual parade of attention-grabbing head accoutrements.

It should be no surprise that fashion-obsessed Lauren Conrad hit up Churchill Downs over the weekend (joined by Paper Crown COO Maura McManus, pictured below), though we were a bit taken aback by the...thing...she donned atop her dome (we leave the technical descriptions to the ladies over at MTV Style). How daring! And the former "Hills" castie wasn't the only celeb to show off eye-catching duds at the Derby. Though the event used to be more frequented by racing fans, in recent years it's become a hot spot for entertainers of all types -- ex-*NSyncers Joey Fatone and Lance Bass were spotted in summery colorful suits, and Kid Rock (yes, really) even swung by the festivities. He didn't exactly get into the Dapper Dan spirit, but at least the rocker wore a hat!

+ LC didn't come away with any winnings (she should have bet on Orb!), but she surely turned heads. Check out the pics, and tell us what you think of her Derby look!
