'Savage' Advice In Action: Take A Cue From SamRon And Don't Fight Love!

MTV’s newest resident sex and relationship guru Dan Savage is trekking across the country to enlighten America's coeds and help them better understand the sexual culture that exists today. But what happens once Dan offers his pearls of wisdom to the eager undergrad? We usually don't get to see the students put his advice into practice, but luckily our own MTV family members can show us all how it's done. This week's advice in action: Don't fight love.

MTV has an obvious love affair with New Orleans. We've filmed two seasons of "Real World" in the Big Easy, which saw everything from sheltered Mormons letting loose to a passive-aggressive toothbrush fight, and on last week's "Savage U," we ventured right back into the heart of the Southern city to tackle the subject of love.

Dan and Lauren took their traveling lecture to Tulane University, a school that claimed to be more boat shoes and Polos than cowboy boots and overalls. As our esteemed pair learned pretty quickly from talking to the student population, guys are preppy, girls are catty and the main sex tradition on campus is simply to have sex. Condoms are basically thrown in your face at Tulane, according to some undergrads, but luckily, there were plenty of curious minds seeking advice, including lovesick Carlos.

Carlos was a sweet guy who'd been feeling intense butterflies after just 8 months of dating someone, but a gnawing voice in the back of his head kept saying, "Dude, you're too young to be whipped." Carlos feared that he was 19 going on 90, and didn't want to risk wasting his college years tied down to one girl. Dan answered Carlos' questions with his own set: Are you happy to be with her? Are you content in general? When Carlos responded with an affirmative smile, Prof. Sav offered some pretty sound advice: Tell the little devil on your shoulder to STFU. Check out the clip:

As Dan explained, it's entirely possible that Carlos' relationship might fizzle one day--after which he can totally tear it up on the singles scene--but he should enjoy what he has now, and welcome it with open arms. There's no doubt that love is a complicated thing, especially when you find it at a young age. But that doesn't mean you should shy away from it; just ask one on-again-off-again-on-again couple in the MTV family.

Since Season 1 of "Jersey Shore," a few things have been clear: 1) GTL is not a hobby, it's a way of life; 2) Snooki + pickles = a good time; and 3) Sammi and Ronnie are destined to be in each other's lives. The pair have gone through their fair share of break-ups and make-ups over the course of five seasons--let's not forget the rise and fall of Single Ronnie in Miami--but somehow they always find their way back to one another. In Season 4, after some initial "are we together or are we not?" awkwardness in Italy, Ron realized just what he wanted, and took Sam to a beautiful Florentine rooftop to tell her how he felt. He finally manned up and accepted the fact that he was in love. Take a look:

The moral of the story here is don't be afraid of commitment. If you find the real thing, embrace it and try it on for size. Love is complex, but that doesn't mean it's unavailable to 20-somethings like Ronnie, Sammi and Carlos. Relationships don't always work out, but being happy with another person is reason enough to give it a chance and silence the annoying little voice that says you're too young to settle down.

+ Tune in for an all-new episode of "Savage U" tonight at 12/11c.
