Back in May, we told you that model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne had snagged a starring role in the sci-fi epic “Valerian,” based on the French graphic novel series “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.” That was exciting and all, but let’s face it… if you’re going to go to space, you’d want to bring your BFFS in tow. Which is exactly why Cara’s partner in crime Rihanna is coming along for the ride.
“Valerian” director and writer Luc Besson — who’s also helmed “The Fifth Element” and "Lucy" — announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday (Oct. 28), saying he’s “Sooo excited” for Rih’s “big” role.
Rihanna’s no stranger to the big screen: she also starred in 2012’s “Battleship” and lent her voice to this year’s animated flick “Home.” She also made cameo appearances in “Annie” and “This Is The End,” and then there’s the cinematic excellence of her “BBHMM” video, which ought not to be counted out, amirite?
“Valerian” stars Dane DeHaan as the titular character and Delevingne as his companion, Laureline. Together, the pair are time-traveling agents who protect Earth from extraterrestrial invaders in the 28th century. Besson’s already given us a look at the style inspiration for Laureline, and she looks like one fiery badass:
Can’t wait to see what spacey, stellar costumes Rihanna gets to rock!
Production on the film is scheduled to begin at the end of this year. Until then, Rih Rih has plenty to keep her busy, including the (hopefully soon) release of her eighth album, Anti, and an appearance on the upcoming Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
