9 Breakup Lessons Liam Payne Can Learn From One Direction Songs

The singer has reportedly split from Sophia Smith after two years of dating.

It’s been a tumultuous week in One Direction land.

On the bright side, the band released their dreamy black-and-white video for “Perfect” and gifted us a nice surprise with the four-song Perfect EP. But then there was that worrisome issue of the guys canceling a show in Belfast because Liam Payne had reportedly fallen ill at the last minute.

Unfortunately, it looks like Liam may be dealing with some heartache on top of everything else, because the 22-year-old has reportedly split from his longtime girlfriend Sophia Smith after two years of dating.

A source told The Daily Mail, “Liam and Sophia have split. Liam is incredibly sad, but is going to keep busy. He really hopes that everybody will respect both his and Sophia‘s privacy and stop speculating.”

Of course, Liam and Sophia are the only ones who can confirm that news with 100 percent accuracy, but so far, both of them have been mum about their state of their relationship. The only maybe-clue we’ve gotten was a cryptic tweet from Liam on Saturday about the healing power of music.

And you know what? Whether that tweet was about him mending a broken heart or surviving a close encounter with a spoon, he’s right: music’s there when you need it. So in that spirit of healing and new beginnings, here are nine breakup lessons Liam can learn from One Direction’s own discography.

  1. Change is hard and jarring and inevitable, but you’ll be OK.

“Everything that you’ve ever dreamed of, disappearing when you wake up/ But there’s nothing to be afraid of, even when the night changes” (from “Night Changes”)

  2. Don’t ever give up on love.

“I know your heart’s been broken but don’t you give up/ I’ll be there, yeah I know how to fix you with love” (from “Stand Up”)

  3. The pain WILL go away.

“Heartache doesn’t last forever, I’ll say I’m fine” and “Midnight doesn’t last forever, dark turns to light” (from “Irresistible”)

  4. Lean on your friends; they’ll make you laugh again and help build you back up.

“You tell me that your hurt it’s all in vein/But I can see your heart can love again/And I remember you were laughing/So let’s just laugh again” and “When the night is coming down on you, we will find a way through the dark” (from “Through the Dark”)

  5. Don’t be a hostile ex.

“Find out what went wrong without blaming each other” (from “Same Mistakes”)

  6. Two years is a long time to be with someone. But splitting after that long doesn’t mean what you had with them wasn’t real.

“But love is always always changing, whoa” (from “Clouds”)

  7. Some things are simply out of your control.

“There’s a moment when you finally realize/ There’s no way you can change the rolling tide/ But I know, yes I know, that I’ll be fine” (from “Ready to Run”)

  8. There are more fun times ahead!

“Girl, you and I/ We’re about to make some memories tonight/ I wanna live while we’re young” (from “Live While We’re Young”)

  9. And if you need to reboot and recharge, the people you love and cherish most in your life will be there to help you.

“Don’t forget where you belong, home/ If you ever feel alone, don’t/ You were never on your own/ And the proof is in this song” (from “Don’t Forget Where You Belong”)
