7 Reasons Jennifer Lawrence Should Absolutely Be Leading The X-Men

Step aside, Professor Xavier.

The other day, it was announced that 20th Century Fox and M&Ms are teaming up for an adorable partnership where they turn "X-Men" characters into tiny chocolate treats. But tucked inside the press release for the new campaign, savvy fans noticed a brand new synopsis for the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse" movie that seems to put Jennifer Lawrence front and center:

"Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction."

Notice at the end there how they mention Raven before Professor X? Sounds like she's going to be leading the fight against Apocalypse, and that's a totally amazing idea. Here's why:

She obviously has experience leading a big emotional action movie.

"Hunger Games," anybody?

Mystique deserves a redemption arc.

This version of the iconic villain has the potential to become more than just an evil femme fatale like her future self does in the original "X-Men" movies. After all, if Magneto can turn from a Machiavellian dictator-type into a sympathetic Holocaust survivor, there's hope for Raven, right?

She also deserves to be in charge of her own destiny.

In the first two movies, Raven spends most of her time being told what to do by Charles Xavier, and because she's the catalyst for everything that goes down in the dark future of "Days Of Future Past," she's sometimes treated like an object that needs to be kept away from the bad guys. It would be amazing to see her take charge and make decisions for herself.

Her power is kinda the best and needs to be used heroically for once.

mystique

There are plenty of awesome shape-shifters in comics, movies and TV, but the ones who are able to change their faces or appearances to look like another person are usually written as evil for some reason. That's probably because it's a superpower still associated with being sneaky or nefarious, and it would be cool to see the new movies continue to break the mold by putting a shape-changer front and center.

Plus, who doesn't love her kick-ass martial arts skills?

She totally needs to throw down with Psylocke at some point, if you ask us.

Let's be real, Professor X has always worked better as a side character.

X-Men: First Class

Charles Xavier has always been a complicated character in the comics -- his vision of a world where humans and mutants can get along inspires the X-Men to be better and save the day, but sometimes he can also be paternalistic, withholding and arrogant. The past version of Xavier, played by James McAvoy, really personifies that, but now he might be closer to mellowing out and being the calm, protective observer he was in the original movies.

Plus, it's about time some more women got to be in charge of a superhero team.

Previously badass female heroes like Black Widow, Maria Hill, Jean Grey and Storm were awesome and important members of their teams, but never the ones you'd necessarily look to when the s--t hit the fan in an all-out battle -- that was always a job for Captain America, Cyclops or Wolverine. If Raven's the one who brings the whole team together, then Raven should be the one to make the important decisions, which is not something women get to do in comic book movies all that often.
