True, any BeyHive member worth his or her questionably obtained Knowles family photo albums has not only already seen Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts” video, but has committed each and every frame to memory. Still, here’s a new behind-the-scenes clip that will give you a whole new, enlightening perspective on the video.
Available right now at beyonce.mtv.com, the making-of featurette includes never-before-seen interviews with director Melina Matsoukas and Bey herself, where they break down all the visual and lyrical meanings that went into “Pretty Hurts.” We’ve rounded up our favorite insights below. Enjoy!
1.) Pretty hurts if there’s nothing underneath.
You know how Bey asks over and over “Are you happy with yourself?” in “Pretty Hurts”? Well, the whole point of the BEYONCÉ opener is that beauty alone will not bring you happiness, especially when you’ve achieved it on someone else’s terms.
In the new behind-the-scenes clip, director Melina Matsoukas explains that: “The concept behind the video is really a behind-the-scenes look into society’s take on beauty and how it doesn’t bring you happiness and it doesn’t move you forward in life… It’s really finding yourself that brings you true happiness.”
2.) Chosen by destiny… ’s child
It turns out that Melina was Bey’s first choice to direct the video. “I knew instantly that I wanted to do ’Pretty Hurts’ with Melina, the “Partition” singer reveals. “I knew that she would understand the message of the song.” And since she is Queen, Beyoncé gets what Beyoncé wants. THUS SPAKE THE QUEEN.
3.) The pressure to be ***flawless
“I’m pretending to get a facelift and botox,” the Out cover lady elaborates. “It represents all of the things that women go through to keep up with the pressure that society puts on us.” Can you imagine Beyoncé needing anything more than a bar of soap?? No, you cannot because #FLAWLESS.
4.) Even “Daddy” can’t rip this fur.
ICYMI, that fur coat Bey wears in that scene in the surgeon’s office isn’t as fabulous as it first appears. “What’s also interesting about that scene, which you don’t really see,” director Melina Matsoukas reveals, “is that she’s wearing a white straitjacket… So, I thought that was interesting, like being confined by society’s standards.”
5.) Those are real beauty pageant contestants.
You know, in case their stunning good lucks, elegance, poise, and grace didn’t tip you off. Um, and did you forget how Beyoncé was totally a tiara-laden toddler back in the day? You did? Forty laps around the neighborhood, and don’t forget to sing “No No No.” We need to work on your breathing. #MatthewKnowlesVoice
6.) Bow down… to inner beauty!
Speaking of which, remember that totally Throwback Thursday photo that Beyoncé used as the art for “Bow Down/I Been On,” the precursor to “***Flawless“? Well, we weren’t the only ones who chose to #BeyInspired by that already-iconic visual.
“I was definitely inspired by this image she has as a child where she’s in front of her fireplace that has these trophies all over,” Melina notes. “I wanted to recreate that and have her break them and show that, you know, it doesn’t really advance you to get these awards that are based on outer beauty. It’s really about inner beauty and substance.”
Truth, but is it OK if we still totally #BowDown to that picture every time we see it? Plz? Thanks.
