Let the record show that we are ALWAYS here for anything related to our eternal pop fave, the late Aaliyah -- and we mean anything. From a retro pop gift with her face on it to that posthumous collaboration with Drake (as long as he touches base with Missy Elliott and Timbaland, LBR), our Stanning knows no bounds.
Guess BANKS must've received our positive, Aaliyah-oriented vibes or something, because she whipped out a heart-stopping acoustic cover of "Are You That Somebody?" earlier today during a visit to BBC Radio 1's "Live Lounge" in London. (See, haterz? "THE SECRET" WORKS. BRB, manifesting your tears.)
Timbaland's inventive production on the 1998 original translates nicely to this stripped-down, guitar-only approach, though we miss that genius baby coo sample, obviously. Guess you can't count on an infant to "OO-AH!" on cue live.
Vocally, the "Brain" singer is entirely on point, alternating between fragile and sharp like a pile of shattered glass as she spills out on the song's confrontational ultimatum. We'll always miss Aaliyah, so it's nice to know that such a talented artist as BANKS is doing her part to keep our Y2K queen's memory alive. #Weeping
