Hey, Feb. 25? You know, this very day today right now? Seeing as how HAIM dropped their new music video for "If I Could Change Your Mind" and a cover of Beyoncé's "XO" for BBC Radio 1's "Live Lounge" in the same 24-hour period, this sisterly trio now officially owns you. Just a heads-up. Thought you'd like to know!
Let's start with clip for the Days Are Gone track. To match HAIM's signature '70s/'80s-cusp rock sound, director Warren Fu cleverly set the video on some sort of era-appropriate, televised performance venue stage. You know, where all the lights sort of radiate a little too bright. (Think Bruno Mars' "Treasure" video, or anything from the happier first half of Leif Garrett's monstrously upsetting episode of "Behind The Music.")
And that's not even mentioning the choreography! Imagine if Patti Smith was a young girl in 1981, somehow saw a vision of "Single Ladies" from the future, and enlisted her sisters to rehearse her premonition over and over until they got it as right as someone with an early-'80s dance sensibility could.
Oh wait, you don't have to imagine that needlessly obtuse visual metaphor, because Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim are doing it RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES. Good thing Este didn't bring along her celebrity BFF, Lorde, because we'd have been typing this with a blown-out crater where our once pop-obsessed head used to be.
In case you need a mellow chaser to that retro-tinged onslaught of awesomeness, watch the Los Angeles natives' cover of "XO" that they laid down for BBC Radio 1.
Although they give it a slightly more aggro treatment than the original featured -- much like they when they covered "Wrecking Ball" for "Live Lounge" -- it's still definitely on the sit down and collect your thoughts side of things. Perfect music, in fact to write HAIM a million fan letters begging them to be your friend, in fact.
