Charli XCX somehow figured out a way to up the intensity.
With apologies to Ashlee Simpson and her "Pieces Of Me" tee shirt, if there's one woman on the music scene who's gonna bring the punk into pop music, it's Charli XCX. Who else but the darkest little Backstreet Boys stan in all the world? (If you haven't heard her version of "I Want It That Way" yet, um, fix that.)
In an unexpected new cover of Swedish punk band Snuffed By The Yakuza's 2004 non-hit "Allergic To Love," the songwriter behind "I Love It" hits hard, and she hits fast. Channeling X-Ray Spex frontwoman Poly Styrene and Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics, Charli barrels through the lyrics, giving her diaphragm a major workout every step of the way.
Clearly, the best part of Charli's cover is the demented, very Nina Hagen-esque "Ahahahahahahaha, achoo!" hook. Wait, scratch that. The REAL best part is what this could mean for the "SuperLove" singer's next move, not to mention pop as a whole.
Could the follow-up to 2013's True Romance be an all-out ear assault of pop-interpreted punk noise? Will all of our faves be jockeying for a seat at the same lunch table as the Dark-Pop Plastics -- i.e., Charli, Rihanna, Sky Ferreira, and Lorde?
C'mon, whaddya think? Wait, why are you... Are you rolling your eyes at us? No, whatever you! That's it, GO TO YOUR ROOM.
