Lorde pals around with a bunch of rowdy teens in her new clip.
Like something out of our wildest, most hauntingly non-narrative teenage dreams, Lorde's "Team" video is rife with the Kiwi queen prodigy's favorite subject: YOUTH REBELLION!!!! There's also a lot of thematic imagery related to "supporting the underdog." Oh, and wearing vintage clothes, gothic updos, and dark lipstick.
Watch Lorde's "Team" video after the jump.
Shot in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood, the Young Replicant-directed clip sees an intricately braided Lorde sitting pretty in a dark cave, surrounded by her
minions friends and some palm tree ferns.
Next, the video quick-cuts to an alternate story line where we meet a normal-looking teen boy who eventually becomes the ruler of this rowdy, Red Hook-based, AGGRO teen posse! Naturally, a fight breaks out, but from what we can tell, this newcomer reigns supreme?? It's all super vague and confusing, just like something out of a dream.
Which makes sense, because it is! The "Royals" singer took to Facebook to shed some light on the "Team" video's inspiration: "This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn't need to be passed in order to be allowed in: Sometimes the person who loses is stronger."
And, there you have it! A world dominated by acne-prone, sweaty teenagers! Too bad this video didn't come out during our ninth-grade "gangly" phase. We tooooootally could've used the ego boost.
