Listen To Janelle Monae's Toned-Down Cover Of 'I Want You Back' By The Jackson 5

Janelle Monae puts her own quiet spin on The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back."

Nu-soul priestess Janelle Monáe and the word "Motown" go hand in hand, as it's a genre that's largely prevalent on her just-released album, The Electric Lady. So it seems totally fitting that she'd tackle one of the greatest Motown hits of all time, the jubilant "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5.

Up until now, the "Dance Apocalyptic" singer has only performed the '70s pop classic live, but hey, look! She's just unleashed a studio version, which is set to appear as a bonus track on a special version of The Electric Lady, only available at Target. *Glances around* Anyone here need to stock up on bath towels, or...?

Now, we're pretty accustomed to watching Janelle dance it out, SING her words, and just generally funk 'n' soul-i-fy everything she touches (see: her mega-artsy, visually stunning "Q.U.E.E.N." video). Ironically, however, when given the chance to put her own spin on the highly danceable "I Want You Back," Janelle instead opts to slowwwww things down.

Accompanied by strums of gentle, classic-sounding guitar and backed up by softly cooing harmonies, the Covergirl tones down the Jackson 5's original work, thus morphing it into a heartfelt, loving, pleading ballad. "Oh baby, give me one more chance (to show you that I love you)/ Won't you please let me back in your heart?" UGH, only a soul-less, spineless nothing could refuse THAT voice. We'll be yours forever, Electric Lady.
