He’s just being Watsky.
Guys, meet Watsky. Actually, it’s George Watsky (it’d be tough building cred as a rapper named George, so we totally get the omission), and if you haven’t heard of him yet, consider yourself a smiiiidge behind the eight ball. And no, we’re not trying to make you feel bad, it’s just that the dude’s online presence is ridiculous (more than 110 million viral views combined), and it’s kinda like, WHY AREN’T YOU ONE OF THEM?? Not to worry, though, because not only are we gonna hit you with all the Watsky 411 you can handle, but we’ve also got the dude’s brand-new video, “Strong As An Oak,” for you watch. WE’RE SO NICE, we know.
Watch Watsky’s “Strong As An Oak” video after the jump.
Maybe you’ll even recognize Watsky from his slam poetry days (he’s the 2006 Youth Speaks Grand Slam Poetry Champion AND appeared on Season 6 of “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry” on HBO). Plus, for being such a newbie, the dude’s got some crazy discography — we’re talking, like, an album/mixtape a year (see: 2009’s Watsky, 2010’s Guilty Pleasures, 2011’s A New Kind of Sexy, and 2012’s Nothing Like The First Time). Sleep? Anyone? Probably not.
On top of all that, Watsky just completed his latest record, Cardboard Castles, and its first single, “Strong As An Oak,” has already wracked up more than 100k views (all in 24 hours, we might add — nice to see he’s got a solid fan army in place). Set to a cheeky, organic track (if there wasn’t a rapper involved, we wouldn’t be surprised if this was a new Ed Sheeran track), the “Strong As An Oak” clip stars Watsky in several vignettes (filmed in a three-way split screen), where he’s at the office, making some mac and cheese at home, and wandering around at the beach (#jealous). Although he’s filmed in three different places, his message is always the same: “Everything is A-OK/ ’Cause I’m strong as an O-A-K/ An oak!/ But money don’t grow on trees/ And I’m B-R-O-K-E/ Broke!” Basically, it sounds like the hippest children’s rhyme ever.
Watsky Stans can peep the dates for the rapper’s upcoming “Cardboard Castles” tour, kicking off in Tempe, Ariz., on March 8, and makes stops at the SXSW Music Festival, Irving Plaza, The Fillmore, and the El Rey. Or be a total groupie and go see all the dates! (We’re already hatching a “follow-the-tour-bus” plan, just FYI.)
