Katy Perry and Richard Marx
Not even sure I can wrap my brain around this one, guys — we just received word that Richard Marx, the genius who penned the late ’80s hit “Right Here Waiting,” covered Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away.” I think this is literally what a teenage dream feels like.
Marx stopped by VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live” to debut his cover and explained: “You know, I’m just sitting listening to my iPod and I love the last Katy Perry CD… I loved the production but I heard this other really heartbreakingly beautiful song inside of [’The One That Got Away’]. So I was really bored that day and I went in my studio and made an acoustic version.” Boredom breeds genius, y’all!
Watch Richard Marx cover Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away” after the jump!
Marx’s version is sweet, soft and vaguely reminiscent of Katy Perry’s own acoustic rendition of the song. The song is set to a backing track with lush strings, and Marx accompanies himself using only a guitar and his vocals. Speaking of vocals, time has not touched the incredible pipes of Richard Marx! In fact, it’s possible that his now seasoned vocals have improved with age. Like a fine, fine wine, my friends.
