The Used went through a lot to get where they are now, including living on the streets, panhandling to survive and addiction. With more than 3 million albums sold under their Gold and Platinum belts, you could say they’ve come a long way from their humble Orem, Utah, beginnings. It’s been a little more than two years since vocalist Bert McCracken, guitarist Quinn Allman, bassist JephHoward and drummer Dan Whitesides released Artwork, but they’ll be returning with their latest album, Vulnerable, this spring.
If their rags-to-rock-star story isn’t inspiring enough, Vulnerable’s first single, “I Come Alive,” should be. “I come alive when I’m falling down/I let myself go, till I hit the ground,” sings McCracken. “When I’m there at the edge in this moment I feel it, I know/I come alive when I’m falling down.” If only we all stared into the abyss and felt more vital from it. The track has plenty of The Used touchstones for fans, from dynamics to the impassioned screams, plus there’s a dash more melodic hook alongside the off-kilter arrangements.
The Used’s fifth studio album, Vulnerable, is slated for release March 27.
