Oh my stars! Up-and-coming pop powerhouse Wynter Gordon performed an acoustic version of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” at a private event in Sydney over the weekend, and we have to say it’s astronomically good (get it?!). In a huge 180 from the original version, she took the over-the-top lyrics like “fill me with your poison” and “ready for abduction” and made them sound yearning and soulful. She actually makes getting probed by weird green men from other planets sound sexy, but we’re sure there’s probably a website already dedicated to that stuff.
The futuristic club-thumper is not too high on the list of songs we’d expect to make a good acoustic ballad, but that’s precisely why it is such a brilliant choice. The best cover songs take the original melody and run as far as possible with it, making it sound like a whole new composition, and Gordon successfully pulls that off. I hope this portends a Wynter Gordon/Katy Perry collaboration in the near future, because that would be…stellar.
