Cometh the Britney single, cometh the remix. You just knew once Britney Spears dropped “Hold It Against Me” it was only a matter of time before the remixes, reworks, mashups and edits started pouring in.
A quick scan of ye olde Internet reveals dozens of dance-oriented remixes, from disco-flavored reworks to even more dubsteppy (dubsteppier?) versions. And there’s already talk of a remix featuring Atlanta MC and ice cream-cone enthusiast Gucci Mane.
For our purposes, today, we’re going to be talking about this remix by Robots With Rayguns, the DJ/production name of electro producer Lucas Patrick Smith. Robots has done remixes for Lady Gaga and Chromeo, and with this version of “Hold It Against Me,” it sounds like they’ve hit another home run.
With some slinky keyboards and minimal drum machine programming, Robots With Rayguns gives “Hold It Against Me” the feel of an ’80s Eurythmics or Pet Shop Boys track. It’s a fascinating listen, and it really shows how much you can do within the remix format.
