Nicki Minaj and Will.i.am get futuristic and neon in their video for "Check It Out," from Nicki's debut album, Pink Friday (Nov. 23). Director Rich Lee describes the video as a "weird, futuristic Korean TV show," and yep, that about sums it up.
After their memorable rendition of "Check It Out" during the 2010 VMA pre-show, where the two resembled Judy Jetson and Batman, we were more than curious to see what Nicki and Will would come up with for the video. All of the usual suspects are present--bright visuals, Nicki's signature wigs and Will.i.am's famous shades--but seeing as though "Check It Out" samples The Buggles' 80s hit "Video Killed The Radio Star," the first music video to play on MTV, we were kind of hoping for something a little more epic.
With help from a group of cloned backup dancers, the Harajuku Barbie and Black Eyed Peas frontman perform a series of stunts for a panel of sunglasses-clad judges. This includes a lot of posing, a little ceiling dancing and strategically fitted latex jumpsuits. In the end Will.i.am gets animated à la a-ha's classic "Take On Me" video, and they finally get their applause. Umm, more of that please!
