Drake’s year has been all about a rise to fame from the mixtape underground and guest spots to spotlit headliner. And at the central force of Drake’s rise to rap superstardom have been two things: his quick-witted lyrics and his star-studded smoothness.
We can’t give away too much of Drake’s VMA performance — gotta keep some things secret — but fittingly, it’s going to be about him owning the stage, commanding the mic, and, predominantly, a showcase for Drake to show off his characteristic smooth steeze.
During his Friday afternoon VMA rehearsal, Drake, in a TLC t-shirt and jeans, keeping it casual-Friday, sauntered around the stage, confident but with no trace of arrogance. Offstage, he was friendly, cool, and collected, making time to chat with all of the MTV staff there to interview him.
Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz will join Drake for his performance — she’ll lend her signature bring-down-the-house belt and he’ll step out from behind the boards to spew some of that spitfire flow. But Drake’s VMA performance will be a very stylish, very slick, and of course, very smooth — beginning of the end of his very big, super-smooth year.
After the jump, check out more photos of Drake rehearsing for his VMA performance. And don’t miss the 2010 MTV VMAs, live from Los Angeles, on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 9/8c.
