When Jay-Z goes black and white with his videos (see "Empire State Of Mind" and "99 Problems") things get real, and things get real dark. For his "On To The Next One" video, the fifth single from his keeps-on-giving Blueprint 3 album, Jay-Z and director Sam Brown sprinkle some avant-garde into the B&W mix, and the results are astounding.
"On To The Next One," featuring Swizz Beatz, is a glossy, sparse, and full of eerie imagery: flying wires, a shirtless drummer, a Joker lookalike, custom cars, paint splatter, an iced-out skull (likely this Damien Hirst piece), a female basketballer (what?) and a white ninja (WHAT?!).
The video has sparked some speculation that Jay-Z has a new-found interest in the occult, given the dark, pagan vibe of some of "On To The Next One"'s imagery.
Jay-Z released this not-so-subtle video at the not-so-subtle hour of midnight, New Year's Eve. Start your New Year's off with his modern art collection and high end production values.
