Maybe it’s the sub-zero temperatures sweeping the 11206 that have everybody’s heads all gaga over fuzzed-out surf music. Maybe it’s lingering visions of topless Barack frolicking on the beach. Who knows! Whatever it is, it’s working for toughie Brooklyn trio Vivian Girls. In fact, in certain circles, you could call them a sensation.
Made up of Cassie Ramone (guitar, vocals), Kickball Katy (bass, vocals) and Ali Koehler (drums, vocals), with a name inspired by the work of bizarre-tist Henry Darger, they’ve been inciting wild, hair-tossing dancedowns all across the grungy Brooklyn underground with vampire guitar sounds and half-speed Ramones hooks.
Think they can hang in the daylight? After spending the morning listening to nothing but their deadpan sweater jams — they sound like a sleepy ’60s girl group engulfed in flames and smiling — I’m voting yes. Check out Vivian Girls’ “Tell Yourself” and decide for yourself.
Then go see them live at one of the following fine establishments:
Tuesday, Jan. 20 Brooklyn, NY Danbro Studios Warehouse
Thursday, Feb. 19 New York, NY The Apollo
Friday, Feb. 20 Philadelphia, PA Trocadero
Saturday, Feb. 21 Washington, DC Sixth & I Historic Synagogue
March 18 – 21 Austin, TX SXSW
