British singer-songwriter-producer Estelle -- think Brandy's R&B vibe and Amerie's hip-hop chops connect with Gloria Gaynor's classic funk -- stopped by TRL last week with her brand-new video, "American Boy."
And while Estelle's MTV appearance was essentially her mainstream U.S. debut, she's no newcomer; the 28-year-old (whom we met backstage -- girl is a glamorous, graceful gazelle) has been grinding away at her music career for nearly a decade. Good thing she had the grit -- and the goods -- to waylay Kanye outside L.A.'s Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles in 2003 (Roscoe's is the new Elaine's!) and hit him up for a meeting with John Legend. Now, five years later, she's signed to John Legend's Homeschool imprint -- both he and Kanye star in her "American Boy" video -- with her sophomore album, Shine, set to drop in May.
"American Boy" makes us wanna fly away on the wings of Estelle's sexy soprano, which has an undeniably soothing, hypnotic effect -- which is probably why it's been playing up and down the halls of our office for well over a week with no sign of relenting.
