This 24-Year-Old Is Cancer-Free Thanks To Planned Parenthood -- And Has A Message For All Its Haters

'Without Planned Parenthood, I don’t even know where I would be now.'

For young people -- especially those who don't have health insurance -- Planned Parenthood can be a lifesaver. Literally.

Last Friday the U.S. House of Representatives voted to defund Planned Parenthood, but this morning (September 25), the Senate blocked the move. In addition to providing birth control, condoms and STD screenings to people (of all genders) who can't afford them on their own, Planned Parenthood also provides access to annual cancer screenings at a sliding scale rate. And, for 24-year-old Ambarie Stacey Schiefer, that service was everything.

In 2013, when she was 23, Scheifer needed surgery to remove abnormal cells from her cervix to keep them from becoming cancerous. When these types of cells are found early through annual pap screens, they can usually be removed through minor surgery. If they're not caught early, they can develop into full-blown cervical cancer, which can potentially be deadly.

In a recent Facebook post that now has over 32,000 likes, Sheifer thanked Planned Parenthood for their services -- and gave the finger to the anyone working to defund the organization.

"At the age of 23, I had surgery to remove part of my cervix to avoid my abnormal cells becoming cancerous." Schiefer wrote. "The middle finger I proudly hold high here was a preemptive 'fuck you' to any and all who want to make it damn near impossible for someone such as myself, without insurance, to find out that I needed such a surgery and then make it possible for me to get that very important surgery. Without Planned Parenthood, I don’t even know where I would be now. I thank them, and thank everyone who supports and believes in them. Thank you. #IStandWithPP."

Although she had her actual surgery in a hospital (since her Planned Parenthood didn't have the facilities to perform it), Scheifer added in a later Facebook comment that "All of screenings and biopsies were at [Planned Parenthood], and they did everything within their power to keep me safe and healthy. ...I still stand by my words that they saved me, by finding the cells...without Planned Parenthood, I never would have seen a doctor to know of the cells and have them removed. I never would have had had a clue until it was possibly too late."
