Here's The Case That 'Serial' Season 2 Is About To Tackle

The popular and influential podcast has set its sights on a new case.

"Serial" junkies, you're about to get an all-new fix.

The podcast, which blew 80 million people (and counting) away with its Peabody Award-winning investigation into the murder conviction of Adnan Syed in Baltimore, Maryland in 1999, has reportedly set sights on a new and possibly even more complicated case to gumshoe the hell out of.

According to The New York Times, the second season will focus on the case of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was freed from captivity by the Taliban in 2014 and given a hero's welcome before being suspected of deserting his Afghanistan base during deployment in 2009.

The U.S. Army has since charged Bergdahl with desertion and endangering the troops who attempted to rescue him and is conducting a preliminary hearing to determine whether the soldier will be court-martialed.

Sgt. Bergdahl was released from his apparent captors on May 31, 2014 in exchange for the release of five Taliban prisoners detained at Guantanamo Bay.

Since the case is currently under investigation and judicial process within the military, information and documentation about the case might be especially difficult to access -- as these courts have special rights to preclude journalists from trial docs that would be a matter of public record in common law court systems.

But if the investigative squad on round two maintains the Sarah Koenig standard of excellence, we have full faith that we'll all be just as riveted this go-round as the last.
