Can Jenna Shake Off The 'Awkward' Title Of Palos Hills H.S.'s 'Most Depressing' Senior?

The resident blogger struggled to confront the worst mistakes of her teenage years.

Maximus Meridius said in "Gladiator" that what we do in life echoes in eternity, and while Jenna Hamilton’s barely old enough to vote, she’s now got sobering evidence that might be actually the case.

On tonight’s “Awkward” episode, the Palos Hills High School senior class found that cynical pillars Theo and Cole had bastardized yet another installment of teenage nostalgia: the distribution of yearbooks. Among their updates? Taking the senior superlative section and turning it on its head. Where Most Athletic and Class Couple previously stood, Most Basic and Best Bulge now found real estate. The worst part? Jenna was named Most Depressing in a clearly pointed shot at her sophomore year reputation as the girl who tried to kill herself (but not really). And though Jenna had made mile-long strides since her struggles as a 16-year-old, she was suddenly thrust back into her old insecurities.

And it wasn’t just the broken arm and neck brace that Jenna was suddenly force to reconsider -- it was the arrest, the temporary drug addiction, the rejection from her choice college and her often maudlin blog posts that had come since. When Lacey accidentally pointed out that her own class year’s superlatives basically served as a collective crystal ball, Jenna panicked and wondered if she was bound for a life of gloom.

Still, when Lacey bravely imitated Jenna in accordance with PHHS’ Mother/Daughter Senior Banquet’s jokey tradition, Jenna realized that her reputation was a result of her compulsion to overthink. She’d chewed Lacey out for her mother’s well-intentioned mockery, and when she realized how irritable it made her seem, she vowed to lighten up.

“Why couldn’t I just take a joke?” Jenna wondered. “If I didn’t see the humor in my past, then I guess I deserved to be called Most Depressing.”

It’s only a few short weeks until graduation, so when Jenna finally receives her diploma and gently shifts her tassel’s placement, what legacy will she leave behind? Can she shake her most recent unfortunate distinction and be remembered for her sharp wit or talent for prose? Or should we commission an engraver to get going on the “Most Depressing” headstone right now? Tell us what you think, and hang tight for the next “Awkward” episode Monday night at 9/8c!
