Taylor Swift's ever-expanding celebrity sleepover squad hasn't always felt ~authentic~ to me.
I mean, let's be real: It can take years to build the kinds of friendships where you're up all night together spilling about your bad blood and boy trouble over rosé in converse-and-sweats. Yet, there's an instant quality to Tay's all-girl hangouts lately that can ring as scripted. Luckily, a new commercial featuring three Hollywood stars gleefully feels like art imitating my already-realized friendship #goals.
On a sunny afternoon in an airy home, three besties -- played by "Scandal" star Kerry Washington, "Empire" vixen Taraji P. Henson, and Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige -- get together with a perfectly throwback soundtrack as they reminisce. Before you can say "girls night," the trio are dancing their faces off to a turn-up playlist that includes Diddy's classic "It's All About the Benjamins."
The fact that the ad is for Apple's streaming service almost seems secondary. Directed by Ava DuVernay ("Selma"), the spot's depiction of long-held female friendships is, well, spot-on. And that cheering you hear? Well, it's the sound of black women, in particular, rejoicing over a portrayal that gives the side-eye to the hair-pulling, neck-snapping ratchetness that passes for friendship on reality TV these days.
