Snapchat has some big news, guys. On Tuesday, Sept. 15, the app released an update with three awesome new features to keep your snap game going strong.
The coolest of the bunch -- in my humble opinion -- is something called Lenses, which are similar to the normal Snapchat geofilters but wayyy more fun to play around with. The second coolest feature is a shiny Trophy Cabinet that magically appears in your user profile. The least coolest is the in-app purchase of extra Replays, because (1) it costs money and (2) Replays already existed before this update, so they're not as exciting as the other two additions.
I spent entirely too much time today messing around with the updated app, so here's the full low-down on all three of these features:
Lenses let you transform your face into something else whenever your Snapchat camera is in selfie mode. Tap your face on the screen and hold down to reveal the available Lenses. You can scroll through 'em and try out different ones like I did in the screenshot below. The animations change daily, so you can always find something new to spice up your selfie.
Once you pick a Lense, you can snap it to your friends or add it to your Snapchat story as usual.
(I'd like to publicly apologize to all my Snapchat friends who were traumatized by witnessing this demon thing in my Story this morning.)
2. The Trophy Cabinet
Your Snapchat score is no longer the only way to keep track of your snapping skillz. The app now rewards you trophies whenever you reach particular milestones or unlock certain goals.
As you can see, my Trophy Cabinet is pretty bare. Clearly I need to step up my Snapchat prowess.
3. Paid Replays
The good news? You can now replay more snaps. The bad news? It's gonna cost you. Previously, you could replay exactly one snap per day, so you had to the pick the #blessed snap very carefully. Snapchat's first in-app purchase lets you buy three additional Replays for $0.99.
Don't get too excited, though. You still can't replay that one holy snap from your crush an infinite number of times. Each snap can be replayed exactly once regardless of how many Replays are available -- so spread those Replays out, because you can't use them all in one place.
"We’ve used [Replay] to relive those amazing moments (or the ones we weren’t paying attention to...) just one more time before they disappear," Snapchat announced on their blog. "We’ve provided one Replay per Snapchatter per day ... But then we realized — a Replay is like a compliment! So why stop at just one? Today, U.S. Snapchatters can purchase extra Replays, starting at three for $0.99 ... They’re a little pricey -- but time is money! ;)"
? right back atchya, Snapchat.
