The release of "Fantastic Four" did not go quite as planned.

A much-hyped superhero film with an expansive budget and a stellar cast -- Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell as the leads -- "Fantastic Four" seemed destined to rise to the top of the crop of summer movies. However, behind-the-scenes drama was reported heavily in the press and box office returns disappointed.

But that doesn't mean that writer/producer Simon Kinberg is quite ready to give up on the franchise yet. A "Fantastic Four 2" had been green-lit prior to the release of the first movie, and in a chat with MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival in support of "The Martian," Kinberg said he wanted to move ahead with it.

"I'm really focused on the next one," Kinberg said, adding that he hasn't yet had the time to decompress and unpack the experience of making and releasing "Fantastic Four." Production on "X-Men: Apocalypse" -- which Kinberg also produced and wrote -- began soon after "Fantastic Four" was released, and only recently wrapped shooting.

"I was obviously disappointed," Kinberg continued. "I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know."

Kinberg noted the vigilant press coverage of the shooting process and various difficulties -- rewrites and reshoots, rumored cast and director drama -- of "Fantastic Four," which didn't help make the process of making a movie any smoother.

"I’ve been on plenty of happy movies that don’t turn out to be very good movies, I’ve been on a lot of unhappy, difficult sets that turn out to be great movies," he said. "There was a lot of attention on the process of making that movie. It’s hard, when you’re making a movie, movies are hard to make. It’s just the reality."

"Every time you make a movie, you want to make a great movie. It’s a ton of time and effort you put in. We made that movie in the sweltering heat of summer in Baton Rouge and I was there every day of photography. You’re waking up every morning being like, I want to go make a great movie. It was an opportunity to do that. I do believe there is a great 'Fantastic Four' movie that we’ve made with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is."

As for a sequel, Kinberg said he's hoping the same cast will return. "We're figuring out what that movie would be," he said. "I'd like that to happen."

Kate Mara, who played Sue Storm in the film and appears in "The Martian," also weighed in with MTV News, stating that she thinks it's, "unlikely that [a sequel] will happen, but I would love to [do one]. I would love to play Sue Storm in a movie that everybody loves. That would be great."
