Back-To-School Beauty Tips From A College Senior

When it comes to going back to school, there's a lot to consider. Beyond choosing, like, what new notebooks you're gonna need for the semester—100% my favorite part of every fall, no contest—you have your ~look~ to consider. Will you finally wear those jeans you bought last year? Will you actually, y'know, remember to put on lipstick daily? There's a lot to explore and, TBH, knowing where to start can be difficult.

Luckily, CollegeFashionista is here to help us figure out what college students are looking forward to this school year, especially when it comes to beauty and style. While StyleGuru Anna Coke helped us navigate back-to-school fashion, Lucy VanEllis is here to weigh in on all things beauty.

MTV: Hi, Lucy! What’s your favorite part about returning to school?

Lucy VanEllis: My favorite part about returning to school is getting a back-to-school wardrobe, of course! I love feeling refreshed from the summer and starting out with a new set of clothes. This always has me excited to start working hard again!

MTV: Where do you look for beauty inspiration?

VanEllis: I love reading, so for beauty inspiration I am always skimming my favorite blogs. I love Into the Gloss, YouBeauty, Harper's Bazaar, Elle and Nylon. I also follow a bunch of fashion bloggers on Instagram and YouTube. Some of my favorites are Lauren Curtis, Zoella, and Amber Fillerup, aka BarefootBlonde.

MTV: Do you ever save certain looks for campus that you wouldn’t wear at home?

VanEllis: 100% yes yes yes! I save my favorite pieces for school days and wear yoga pants and leggings when I am binge-watching Netflix at home. I also take about 5 minutes to do my makeup for a regular day, but I will take a lot longer when I have classes or my internship. I love dressing up for classes and putting effort into my look, because then I feel more motivation throughout the day. If I ever wear yoga pants to class (which is rare) I am tired throughout the day because I am almost too comfortable!

MTV: How do you transition your beauty looks from summer to fall?

VanEllis: My summer beauty routine is typically light, bright and shimmery. For the fall I like to use bronze, chocolates and greens. I start using darker browns on my eyes and I darken my blush from a bright pink to a deep rose. I still like to add electric pops to my eyes, so I will sometimes use a light purple on the inner corners of my eyes, and end with a deep purple on the outer corners.

MTV: What’s the one look you can’t wait to try this fall?

VanEllis: Graphic liner is going to be HUGE this Fall, so I am really excited to start pushing the limits with my eye liner. I am also excited to start trying out different liquid lipsticks; they’re getting more and more popular and now I just need to find that perfect color that will last all day!

MTV: If you could only bring three beauty items to school this semester, what would they be?

VanEllis: I would bring my eyebrow pencil because I think brows are so important in framing your face. I would throw my LashBlast mascara in my bag, because it makes my lashes look so full and long. And I would bring my COVERGIRL Outlast Lipstain to add some color!

MTV: Any tips for getting the perfect street style shot? We need them. Desperately.

VanEllis: To get the perfect street style photo... make sure your background isn’t too busy. Although that graffiti wall may look super fun, it may be a little distracting, especially if you want the viewer to focus on your outfit. Shooting from the ground up is typically the most flattering angle because it elongates everything. And lastly make sure you find a shaded area to shoot. Shooting in direct sunlight makes the lighting a bit too harsh and if the sun is in your eyes you won’t be comfortable either!

Because she is an expert, Lucy broke down her top knot tips for us—helloooo, new fall 'do.
