Mt. McKinley Is Mt. Denali Again

Being president is awesome for so many reasons, but this weekend President Obama found yet another reason why it's great to live in the White House. As of Monday (August 31), The tallest mountain in North America -- 20,237-foot Mt. McKinley -- will be renamed Denali, which it was originally known as by Alaskan natives before its name was changed to honor 25th President William McKinley in 1917. The name change will come as part of the president's three-day trip to Alaska this week to highlight the effects of climate change on the Arctic, with the switch recognizing "the sacred status of Denali [which means "the great one"] to generations of Alaska Natives."

Cop Ambusher Due In Court

Shannon J. Miller, the man charged with ambushing and killing a Texas sheriff's deputy for no apparent reason on Friday, will make his first court appearance on Monday. Miller has been charged with capital murder in the case, in which he is accused of ambushing Deputy Darren H. Goforth as the cop was filling up his patrol car at a gas station when he was shot in the back. Though officials do not yet know a motive, Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman told CNN he thought his deputy was killed because "he was wearing a uniform."

Is There Life On Mars? Apparently.

The Mars Curiosity rover has founds lots of interesting things, most of them rocks. But for some space heads, those rocks look kind of familiar, including some oddly shaped ones that conspiracy theorists claim look like Earth-bound creatures and snacks. Among the objects they've spotted: lizards, mermaids, traffic lights, jelly donuts, a crashed space ship and, of course, a bust of President Obama.

Quick Take 1: As the Confederate flag continues to come down across the south, a statue of Confederate president Jefferson Davis was removed from a spot on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin this weekend after a court rejected an appeal from a Confederate heritage group. The statue will be moved to the Briscoe Center history museum on campus, which has one of the nation's largest slavery archives.

Quick Take 2: After topping the box office for a third week, the N.W.A biopic "Straight Outta Compton" is now the highest-grossing musical biopic ever. With a haul of $134 million to date, the gangsta rap origin story has surpassed the previous record-holder, the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line" ($119.5 million).
