5 Times Justin Timberlake And Jessica Biel Were Inspiring LGBT Allies

The married couple are being honored with an award for their support of the LGBT community.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are a fantastic, #RelationshipGoals-worthy couple for several different reasons. Take their aww-dorable birthday celebrations, for instance, or their shared new parent joy.

But one of the things that makes them a truly upstanding team is their shared interest in social justice issues. And now, the do-gooder pair is being honored for one aspect of their work by anti-discrimination organization GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network). The organization announced Tuesday (Aug. 25) that it will honor Justin and Jessica with the Inspiration Award at its annual Respect Awards in October.

GLSEN’s executive director, Dr. Eliza Byrd, said in a statement that Jessica and Justin “are two vocal and committed allies to the LGBT community who are also devoted to charitable works that improve the lives of youth.”

The couple — who wed in 2012 and welcomed son Silas Randall in April — have indeed been longtime advocates for equality. Check out these five inspiring times they were proud allies for the LGBT community:

  1. Justin has long advocated for marriage equality in the U.S.

Sure, tons of celebs tweeted their excitement about the landmark ruling in June that legalized same-sex marriage. But Justin’s been vocal about the issue since as far back as 2011, when he voiced his enthusiasm for the passage of New York gay marriage laws in an interview with The Advocate.

“I was stoked. I mean, I was stoked that that happened,” he said. “I think it's just ... we're people and we're different, all of us. And we should be using our differences to bring ourselves closer together. You know? Not be afraid of something that we don't know. I’m proud that New York has balls to stand up for what’s right.”

  2. Justin’s also not afraid to get real about straight guys’ relationships with gay men.

Let’s face it: some straight guys are still weird about this. But in a press junket to promote “Friends with Benefits,” in which Woody Harrelson is his onscreen gay best friend, Justin pressed the issue by sharing his own experiences, saying, “I have a lot of guy friends that are straight and gay and you know, I get along with them the same way, and I wanted that to come from an honest place from my own friendships with men who have a different sexual preference than I do.”

  3. The couple reportedly employ a pair of gay nannies.

Ever the busy and popular parents, Jessica and Justin understandably need some assistance taking care of their newborn. They reportedly hired two gay male nannies for Silas, proving they’re truly a prejudice-free family.

  4. Justin’s also applauded Obama’s LGBT activism.

In 2012, President Obama announced his support of same-sex marriage during his State of the Union address. Afterward, JT backed him up on Twitter with these kind words.

  5. Earlier this year, Justin performed at a same-sex wedding.

In a truly memorable display of awesomeness, Justin performing at the wedding of Jessica’s friends Dana Panzer and Amy Wicker. As seen in this amazing clip captured by a guest, Justin gave a nod to same-sex marriage while performing his hit “Señorita,” dedicating a special intro to the couple: “All the fellas all look at the ladies. And if you just got married tonight, the ladies gonna look at the ladies, if you know what I’m saying.”
