'Toy Story 4' Will Be An Emotional Journey For Bo Peep

"Toy Story 4" is the rom-com we never knew we wanted.

We know "Toy Story 4" is a love story that follows Woody on a journey to find his one true love, Bo Peep -- but the film will be every bit an emotional journey for Bo Peep as well.

The last time we saw the lively shepherdess, she was nothing more than a memory in "Toy Story 3," having been sold alongside Wheezy and Lenny. In "Toy Story 4," Woody and Buzz will set off on an action-packed adventure to find her, and along the way, we'll learn that Bo Peep is a whole lot more than a pretty porcelain face.

"I love Bo Peep," John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, told MTV News and a group of journalists at Disney’s D23 Expo. "And we never got to know her backstory. She wasn't in 'Toy Story 3' at all, so it really set us up nicely for her to come back. It's a very special story."

While Lasseter is keeping most of the film's details under wraps for now, he did reveal that Bo Peep's tale in "Toy Story 4" is inspired by his wife Nancy's "incredible" life story.

"Bo Peep really reminds me of my wife Nancy in many ways," he said. "And my wife Nancy has an incredible emotional story, before I met her, so it's a very personal story -- as every film at Pixar. But that's what this one is for me. It's a very touching story that's inspired by my love for my wife."

The film will no doubt serve as a love letter to his wife, and with a story so important to Lasseter, he's entrusted writers Rashida Jones and Will McCormack to help bring it to life.

"If you've seen the film that they've done, 'Celeste and Jesse Forever,' there's a special quality to the love story and the writing and the cleverness they have," he said. "They're great writers."

For Lasseter, who will be directing the anticipated flick, Jones brings something very important to the table: having a strong female voice.

"It's very important to me," he said, "Because we're trying to build Bo Peep into a very strong character."
