Miley Cyrus’ Latest Collaborator Is The Genius Behind So Many Badass Pop Gems

Here's all the proof you need that Miley's new music is going to SLAY.

Details about Miley Cyrus’ forthcoming album have been trickling in little by little. We know, for example, that she’s working again with Mike Will Made It, she’s recording in her garage, and The Flaming Lips have been a huge influence on her sound.

But our VMAs hostess has now dropped a major hint about another collaborator she’s enlisted — and it sounds like we have an awesomely badass alliance on our hands.

Yesterday (July 30), Miley shared a pic of her mugging for the camera (and flipping the bird) behind the mic in a studio, captioning it, “When u izzzz recordinnnn w Linda Perry!”

Producer Kerry Brown followed up by posting a pic of him, Miley, and Perry in the recording studio, captioning it, “What a great day blowing up headphones with @reallindaperry and @mileycyrus.”

Yep, that’s legendary rocker/producer/songwriter Linda Perry they’re talking about — the woman whom you might remember from 4 Non Blondes’ 1992 hit single “What’s Up?” and the craftswoman of dozens of pop and rock tracks from the past couple decades. She’s penned songs for a huge range of artists, from Celine Dion to Courtney Love, and she especially has a knack for creating bold, empowering songs for strong female artists. She helped both Pink and Christina Aguilera, for example, transition from young pop stars to mature superstars, so her new gig with Miley definitely sounds like a promising treat.

Let’s take a look at nine songs you probably didn’t know Perry wrote or co-wrote.

“Get The Party Started” by Pink (2001)

A decade and a half later, this one’s still a rambunctious turn-up jam. Perry wrote and produced a ton of songs from Pink’s 2001 album Missundaztood, including this energetic anthem, which earned a pair VMAs for Best Female Video and Best Dance Video.

“Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera (2002)

Perhaps one of Xtina’s most famous and beloved ballads, this self-esteem-boosting track went on to win the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

“What You Waiting For?” by Gwen Stefani (2004)

The No Doubt frontwoman made her solo debut with her 2004 album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., and this catchy jam was its opening track and lead single. Ah, Harajuku Girls, we miss you.

“Mono” by Courtney Love (2004)

Love also made her debut as a solo artist with a Perry-written track: the furious, passionate banger “Mono.”

“One Word” by Kelly Osbourne (2005)

What’s that? You forgot K.O.’s short-lived but productive music career of yesteryear?! This synthpop banger was the first and only single from Kelly’s sophomore album, Sleeping in the Nothing, which included a ton of Perry-penned tracks.

“Hurt” by Christina Aguilera (2006)

Serious question: Is it even possible to listen to this heartbreaking ballad without breaking down into a puddle of tears? Perry co-wrote this one with Christina and Mark Ronson, and went on to craft more songs for Back To Basics, including “Candyman” and “Save Me From Myself.”

“Superwoman” by Alicia Keys (2007)

This empowering, sisterhood-preaching song earned Keys her second consecutive Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Oh, and the music video featured cameos by Jada Pinkett Smith and little tyke Jaden Smith. Aww!

“Keeps Gettin’ Better” by Christina Aguilera (2008)

Clearly, Christina and Perry are a match made in musical heaven. The two teamed up for the zillionth time on Xtina’s greatest hits album, which boasted this electropop-leaning single.

“Put Your Hearts Up” by Ariana Grande (2011)

Long before she was ruling the charts, Ariana was wearing poofy pink dresses in the video for her debut single, which included songwriting credit from Perry because it sampled “What’s Up?” in perhaps the poppiest way ever.
