The Internet effectively blew up when "High School Musical" director Kenny Ortega and a few of our favorite Wild Cats reunited over the weekend on the carpet for Ortega's latest Disney Channel Original Movie, "Descendants," which premieres Friday (July 31).
Cast members Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay Evans), Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth), Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie), Lucas Grabeel (Ryan Evans) and Olesya Rulin (Kelsi Nielson) showed up to support "HSM" helmer Ortega -- and, of course, the perfect moment was captured on camera. Sharpay would be *so* proud.
"It was such a surprise to see everyone," Ortega told MTV News while promoting his upcoming DCOM "Descendants." "Ashley, with her new husband, and Corbin, with his fiancée, and Lucas and Monique and Olesya. And Chuckie Klapow, my co-choreographer from 'High School Musical,' was there too. And they just rounded everyone up, and Lucas threw his camera out and grabbed that photograph, and it's precious."
"They were there to support me, and they were there to support the kids," he added. "And they couldn't have been more generous with their reaction and the energy that they've given to the project. It was lovely." Ortega said he feels a very similar kinship with the young cast of "Descendants," which includes Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson and Booboo Stewart.
Sadly, Troy and Gabriella (Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens) weren’t there to share in the reunion selfie fun, with Efron filming in Hawaii for his new movie, "Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates," and Hudgens opting out due to "family reasons" -- "but both of them were with us in spirit," said Ortega.
"They are loving and wonderful friends, and I know we would have enjoyed having them there," he added.
With the tenth anniversary of "High School Musical" approaching early next year (January 20th, to be exact), Ortega hopes to reunite the Wild Cats for one big hurrah. "I hope that we'll all get together and do something -- and more than a dinner. I'm not going to try and conceive it, but it would be nice for us all to gather somewhere because it was a great time. We had so much fun together."
But they won't just be celebrating 10 years of "HSM." Sharpay's pooch Boi (Manly Ortega) will also turn the big 1-0 next year. "He's my little dog, so he'll definitely be invited."
