J. Cole Changes Lives: 12 Fans Tell Their Stories

J. Cole's making a difference.

LOS ANGELES, California -- J. Cole once said he had a feeling that his music would "change lives forever." He was right.

That line - from 2013's "Let Nas Down" - rang true at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday night during a stop on his Forest Hills Drive Tour.

So, MTV News caught up with some of Cole's fans at the show to talk about how much of a difference the Dreamville boss has made in their lives. And supporters were candid about their experiences, from a bout with suicidal thoughts to dealing with death-related grief. Here are their stories as further proof of the "Love Yourz" MC's impact and influence.

"On a serious note, a couple of years ago, I was ready to commit suicide. I just happened to have The Sideline Story playing in my car. And for whatever reason, I had it on 'Dollar And A Dream [III].' There was something about the lyrics and just sitting in my car, hearing his voice as I was getting ready to f--kin' drive my car off the [Pacific Coast Highway], there was something about him that just calmed me down.

It was crazy. I know I sound nuts saying it or whatever, but there was something about it that completely changed my life. So, I'm thankful for him.

Every time I come to his shows, I'm inspired more and more. I moved to L.A. with a dream. I'm from Sacramento. I haven't accomplished my goals yet. I went to music school. Nothing's worked out. Now, I've got this goal of going to New York and trying to pursue something in [public relations] there. There's something about him, his lyrics and his meaning behind every story that has me more and more inspired to go follow those dreams."

"J. Cole has changed my life mainly because I've been one of those die-hard fans since the '08 grind...Hearing his spirit and the way that he evokes his music in such a pronounced way, he's really become a vision of that new era.

He's kind of like what I envision as our new-age Biggie with Kendrick Lamar being our new-age Tupac. [Cole has] that New York style and that Southern style at the same time. Being a Southern man myself - from Alabama - I can always appreciate that from a man who comes out there and gives his heart and soul to the music and to his craft."

"J. Cole changed my life when I listened to 'Never Told.' I loved him before that, but when he broke down this girl's - not necessarily her life, but her persona - just telling her, 'Look, at the end of the day, you're not gonna tell me what to do. I'm grown. But anything can happen.'

This is her story and it's never been told. Too many people out there have that story that you're never gonna hear. But you hear it from a star and it's really out there. I'll forever love that song."

"He's a real person. Everything he talks about, everything he preaches is something I can relate to. On this past album [2014 Forest Hills Drive], he talked about going back to his family and going back to his roots.

Also, I YouTube him a lot. And just seeing him being his real self, not really flashy, not being a big boss like everybody else, he just keeps it real. He relates to us."

"J. Cole has changed my life because he's come from nothing. He's come from so little and he's made a difference in his own life and in so many other peoples' lives. He's inspired me to go out there and chase my dreams because if he could do it, anybody could do it. You know?

And I have so many dreams. But right now, I'm trying to be a fire fighter. I've been chasing that for awhile. I actually have a test this Saturday for the Los Angeles Fire Department. That's what he teaches me. If you set your mind to it, you can do anything. Just like him.

I can't wait to see him right now. I love Big Sean. I love YG. But J. Cole's the main reason why I'm here. I actually saw him on Friday in Chula Vista. I saw him two days ago."

"He's changed my life completely. That's what rap's all about. He's real. He talks about real life and what he went through. He doesn't front like any of the other rappers. He changed my life when he said you have to go out and get it. He moved to New York and totally left his mom. I feel I'm so attached to my mom, but I have to go out and get it. You know?

I'm gonna go to UCLA. I was afraid to move away, but I'm just gonna go and get it. I'm gonna be a registered nurse and do what I gotta do to get my money."

"J. Cole changed my life. He's been helping me thrive to get to my goals, man. He's the best. He's the best with his lyricism and everything.

His music has shown me his struggles and I have to get to the top now, man. My goal is to become an engineer and become a millionaire, dog."

"When I first started listening to J. Cole, I realized he spoke nothing but truth. That's how he changed my life. The song 'Love Yourz,' the words in it, took me to a different place.

To get really personal...I went through a really bad break-up. I heard that song right after my break-up. It just changed my perspective on everything and who I felt I was as a person and who I felt like he - the person who cheated on me - was as a person."

"J. Cole is one of those artists that don't come around much any more. Nineties hip-hop had a lot of J. Coles, in my opinion. But J. Cole is now the '90s artists for us 2015-ers, the youngsters who grew up in the '90s and didn't really have a chance to look at the '90s artists live like we just did with J. Cole.

He's not a Tupac in a hood way. But he's intellectually smart and everything. He has all that. He's smart and has been through the hood. He's done all that sh-t."

"My grandma just passed away. She was my mom, my dad, my everything. 'Love Yourz' really helped me get through all of it in every way. It teaches you to appreciate things more no matter what you have. You always have something. Even if it's not everything, it's something."

"J. Cole has changed my life through his music and his lyrics. He makes me listen to the music more and to the lyrics more. Other artists rap about stupid sh-t. But J. Cole is a lyricist. His words actually mean something. He's just dope, dog."

"J. Cole changed my life. Basically, I started listening to him in high school. Everything was going bad. I thought I wasn't gonna amount to much. But I started listening to his music - like 'Dreams' and 'Grown Simba' - and he made me realize, 'Don't give up on your dreams. You can do whatever you want as long as you put your mind to it.'"

Cole's Forest Hills Drive Tour - which also features Big Sean and YG - is set to run through August 29 when it's slated to close its curtains in Fayetville, North Carolina.
