9 Behind-the-Scenes Secrets From ‘Lip Sync Battle’s Live Showdown in NYC

Julianna Hough got too sexy for her brother.

Just when you thought “Lip Sync Battle” couldn’t get any better, they staged a live version of the hit Spike TV show, and it was epic.

Even though previous performances included the likes of Anne Hathaway jumping on a Miley Cyrus-style wrecking ball and John Krasinski shimmying like a true “Proud Mary,” seeing the action unfold in front of 5,000 people in NYC’s Central Park was a total game-changer. MTV News was on hand to watch the one-take wonders, including a rematch between dance siblings Derek and Julianne Hough and “Broad City” babes Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer.

Find out what happened behind-the-scenes on Monday night (July 13), from a “Magic Mike”-themed dance to host LL Cool J’s surprise performance.

  1. Julianne Hough Gave Us A “Grease Live!” Preview

After Derek’s repeat performance of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us” in a slick leather jacket, Julianne joked, “He's got his Grease Lightnin’ outfit on." Of course, that prompted her and L.L. to sing, "I got chills, they're multiplying,” giving us a teeny tiny preview of what she sounds like singing the “Grease” classic ahead of her role as Sandy in NBC’s next musical.

  2. Chrissy Teigen Took “Tubthumping” Very Literally

After Julianne nailed Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping,” color commentator Chrissy tried to juggle a few cocktails. “I made the whiskey drink and the vodka drink. I couldn't keep up!” she exclaimed, adding, “I drank them both.”

  3. Abbi Jacobson Is Basically Val IRL

Remember Abbi’s “Broad City” alter ego, Val? Her portrayer is basically the talented musician in real life. Even though she wasn’t actually singing “Dreamgirls” hit “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” watching her fake-belt the song and hip-thrust in a floor-length, glittery gold gown was amazing enough.

  4. Men Got (Almost) Naked With Ilana Glazer

True to her “Broad City” character, Ilana performed “It’s Raining Men” with a bunch of sexy men in speedos. They were half naked as they formed a “Magic Mike” circle around her, complete with well-placed umbrellas. When Chrissy asked her what was underneath her rain jacket, Ilana responded, “No top; just shorts and loose boots.” By the way, this was just a preview of the “Broad City” showdown, which airs on July 30 at 10 p.m. ET on Spike.

  5. Hoda Kotb Stole The Show -- And The Belt

After Chrissy thought she “lost” the winners’ belt, Hoda Kotb came out and did her “Uptown Funk” lip sync routine before handing it over. Sadly, Michael Strahan was not there for a rematch or to show off his “Magic Mike” moves.

  6. Derek Hid From Julianne’s Sexy Routine

Last time Julianne and Derek were on “Lip Sync Battle,” she performed (and won because of) The Lonely Island’s “I Just Had Sex,” but left her brother totally embarrassed. His solution this time? Just cover his entire head with his jacket.

  7. Chrissy Got Real About Her Sex Life

After Derek’s little stunt, Chrissy put a paper bag decorated with a smiley face over her head and solemnly said, “This is how John makes me have sex with him." We’re calling her bluff.

  8. L.L. Cool J Was The Only One to Really Sing

During some down time between performances, L.L. Cool J and Doug E. Fresh rapped “La Di Da Di,” then L.L. took the stage solo to rap his classic track “Around the Way Girl.” Julianne came over to dance up on him, then he picked up a toddler from the audience to dance with her. It was a little weird, but fun.

  9. Derek Won The Battle With Big ‘80s Hair

Derek’s final selection was “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” and he brought out all the stops. With a huge ‘80s-style red wig and a white pant suit, he committed to the role, even fake-playing an electric guitar. “I'm about to do ‘Blades of Glory,’” he joked before he took home the championship belt. “I don't think you will ever live this down,” Julianne told him, and she’s 100 percent correct.
