21 'X-Men' Moments That Hurt So Good, Every Time, 15 Years Later

The truth is, mutants are very real, and they're still among us.

Fifteen years ago, a little movie called "X-Men" came along and basically changed absolutely everything.

Okay, maybe "absolutely everything" is a bit much. But it changed a lot! Like a big ol' mutant coming-out party, director Bryan Singer's superhero movie paved the way for so much of what we see today, like the Marvel Studios renaissance, all the winning and losing attempts at "Spider-Man," and even a colorful roster of "X-Men" flicks that still thrives today.

But as much as we love the "Days of Future Past" days of recent past, and as much as we hope we'll love the "Apocalypse" days of tomorrow, you never forget your first. Here's a look back at 21 of our very favorite "X-Men" moments, 15 years later.

  1. Meet Wolverine, cage fighter.
    Fox

Hugh Jackman's first scene as a professional bar-fighting gladiator, beating opponents without having to pop a single claw, remains very high on the list of his all-time greatest Wolverine moments.

  2. Logan, meet Marie.
    Fox

Before they became full-fledged X-Men, they were just two wandering souls on the road. Jackman and Anna Paquin were the beating heart of "X-Men," and remain as powerful as ever today.

  3. Wolverine throws "X-Men" code name shade...
    Fox
  4. ...and Rogue throws it right back.
    Fox

She absorbs your bullsh-- and comes back stronger than ever. Now THAT'S power.

  5. Wolverine critiques the "X-Men" costumes...
    Fox
  6. ...and Cyclops delivers the perfect response.
    Fox

Honestly, yellow spandex would be pretty freaking awesome in this day and age, but back then, it was unfathomable.

  7. Every single Xavier and Magneto scene.
    Fox

There's a reason Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are, together, one of our favorite pairs of best friends in the business — and it has a lot to do with their deep-rooted adversarial relationship forged here in "X-Men."

  8. Magneto's absolute disdain for humanity.
    Fox

This guy does NOT like you.

  9. Magneto turns the tables on the cops...
    Fox

...and it remains one of the most iconic superhero movie scenes of all time. P.S., did you know the cop that gets the bullet pressed up against his forehead is David Hayter, "X-Men" screenwriter and erstwhile voice of "Metal Gear Solid" hero Solid Snake? The more you know!

  10. The first time we meet Bobby Drake.
    Fox

That Iceman. So cool right now.

  11. That other time we meet Bobby Drake...
    Fox
  12. ...except it's actually Mystique!
    Fox

We love Jennifer Lawrence, and she's absolutely redefined Raven Darkholme on screen. That said, never forget the eternally blue and beautiful Rebecca Romijn.

  13. Toad pulls a "Phantom Menace."
    Fox

Between Darth Maul in "Star Wars" and Toad in "X-Men," few people had a greater turn of the millennium than Ray Park.

  14. "Do you know what happens when a toad gets struck by lightning?"
    Fox

If you don't know the answer, then you need to put "X-Men" on immediately. Apologies in advance for the big hand-shaped mark you will have on your forehead for the rest of the day.

  15. Every single Jean Grey scene.
    Fox

Famke Janssen is a long way from Xenia Onatopp as the telepathic mutant at the heart of both Cyclops and Wolverine's affections. Speaking of those guys...

  16. Wolverine and Cyclops hate each other.
    Fox

    It's always awesome.

  17. Seriously, they really don't like each other.
    Fox

    And seriously, it's ALWAYS awesome.

  18. The Statue of Liberty fight.
    Fox

Pretty much the only thing Tyler Mane's Sabretooth is good for, TBH.

  19. Every single Wolverine scene.
    Fox

Honestly cannot talk about this guy enough. Jackman was an absolute unknown in Hollywood at the time, and stepped into the role of Wolverine with just days to go before filming, after actor Dougray Scott dropped out suddenly. Scott's loss is both Jackman's and our gain.

  20. The sexiest shot of the entire movie:
    Fox

    Peace out, Senator Kelly.

  21. JK, the ACTUAL sexiest shot of the entire movie:
    Fox

Good god, that man must have one HUGE ackman.
