Shawn Mendes: singer and stunt man?
It sure looks that way -- at least based on this behind-the-scenes clip of the making of his new video, "Stitches."
"Shooting the "Stitches" video was such an amazing experience. The shoot took about 10 hours and was all stunts," Shawn told MTV News. "I had to learn how to get hit realistically, and had a stunt double for some of them. It was amazing to really get to act in this one."
The singer gave us an inside look on how that all went down on set, and it wasn't too hard for him to look like he was realistically getting punched, since he's been preparing for this all his life.
"Luckily, when I was a kid I used to pretend like I was getting beat up all the time," Shawn said. "It's fun -- it's challenging is what it is actually."
And Shawn was certainly up for the challenge. In the video, the singer, who described the clip as an “awesome action sequence,” appears to be trying to break down an invisible wall, but each time he takes a step, his face takes a punch.
"Your mood is totally serious -- it's intense, it's almost like you know you're getting into something [but] you don't know what you're getting into," director Jay Martin told Shawn on set. "But when you're getting hit, it's not like you are shocked by it."
But as we all know after watching the video, Shawn doesn't really get beat up; it's all in his head, which is revealed in the final scene.
"Just filming the very last scene -- I'm not all beat up anymore. I'm looking into the mirror and realizing that I was never hurt in the first place," he said. "It was emotionally, the girl was hurting me."
